Piet du Toit had the kings wildebeest bull "King" on his first game auction in February 2012. The bull sold on the auction for R 5 100 000 + VAT. Thereafter there were many game farmers looking for kings wildebeest. There were not a lot of kings wildebeest those days, and most people did not know exactly what a kings wildebeest was.
A meeting was organized in June 2013, bu exsisting kings wildebeest breeders, to determine the characteristics / features of a kings wildebeest, as well as to set a standard. The meeting was held at the WRSA offices in Pretoria. The organizers done a very good job of inviting and getting all the kings wildebeest breeders to the meeting. The meeting was not only for exsisting breeders, but also for people interested in kings wildebeest. The interest by farmers were excellent. There were so many people, that the hall was fully packed.
A number of kings wildebeest breeders brought photos of their kings wildebeest to the meeting, which was displayed on large screens. These photos were discussed and commented on by all attending the meeting. With the photos as examples, the characteristics / features of the kings wildebeest were decided on, by all who attended the meeting.
The characteristics / features as decided by the kings wildebeest breeders in June 2013:
A kings wildebeest must have a grey / blue to dark blue / blackish body colour, similar to normal blue willdebeest.
The tail, mains, and beard must be white. Kings wildebeest are born with the white tail, mains, and beard.
The nose and mouth, around the eyes, and inside of ears must be pink, although some are lighter pink colour, and others are a darker pink colour.
The face of an adult kings wildebeest must be mostly or all white. Younger kings wildebeest has shades of brown and black face colour, which becomes whiter as the wildebeest changes colour as they get older.
A kings wildebeest must have a white stripe on the back, from where the mains end, to the top of the tail.
If a kings wildebeest has a spot, the spot must be exactly the same on both sides of the body.
Note: A spot is not a required feature or characteristic of a kings wildebeest.
